Miracle in Sagamu: Anthony Joshua Survives Fatal Crash That Killed Two in Nigeria

Just weeks after silencing critics with a knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami, British heavyweight icon Anthony Joshua is counting his blessings today after surviving a horrific car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria.

While the champion walked away with only minor injuries, the incident has ended in tragedy. Two passengers traveling in the same vehicle—a black Lexus SUV—were confirmed dead at the scene, casting a dark shadow over what was meant to be a celebratory homecoming.

The Crash on the “Expressway of Death”

The accident occurred late Monday morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a notorious stretch of road frequently cited as Nigeria’s most dangerous highway.

According to reports from the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle was traveling near the Sagamu interchange—Joshua’s ancestral hometown—when it lost control during an overtaking maneuver. The SUV collided violently with a stationary commercial truck parked on the shoulder of the road.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene. “The jeep was trying to pass, but the truck was just there, no warning signs,” said Adeniyi Orojo, a local trader who witnessed the aftermath. “The impact was terrible. We saw AJ climb out… he looked dazed, shirtless, holding his side, but he was alive. The others were not so lucky.”

A Narrow Escape

Joshua, 36, was reportedly seated in the back of the vehicle. Images circulating on social media showed the boxer walking towards a police vehicle, visibly shaken but moving under his own power. He was transported to a private hospital in Sagamu for treatment of cuts and bruises but has since been discharged.

“Anthony is devastated by the loss of life,” a representative for his management team, 258 MGT, said in a brief statement. “He is physically okay, suffering only minor injuries, but emotionally, this is a heavy blow. He asks for privacy for the families of the deceased.”

The identities of the two victims have not yet been released, though local sources suggest they were close associates of the boxer who had accompanied him on the trip.

From Triumph to Tragedy

The crash comes at a jarring moment in Joshua’s career. Earlier this month, he dominated headlines with his highly publicized bout against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The fight, streamed to millions on Netflix, ended with a decisive sixth-round knockout by Joshua, reigniting talks of a final title run.

Joshua had traveled to Nigeria to reconnect with his roots and celebrate the win in Sagamu, the town where his family holds deep aristocratic ties. He has frequently spoken of the spiritual grounding he finds in his Nigerian heritage, often retreating there between high-profile fights.

The Dangers of the Road

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a critical artery connecting Nigeria’s economic hub to the rest of the country, but it is also a graveyard. Plagued by potholes, reckless driving, and broken-down heavy-duty trucks left abandoned in travel lanes, the road claims hundreds of lives annually.

Today, the “Expressway of Death” claimed two more souls, and nearly took one of the world’s most famous athletes with them. As investigations into the exact cause of the crash continue, the boxing world breathes a collective sigh of relief for the champion, while mourning those who didn’t make it out.
